Vanessa Werden

Vanessa joined SHK as an associate in 2012 after articling with the firm. A civil litigation lawyer, Vanessa’s practice focuses on construction law and insurance defence.

In her insurance practice, Vanessa represents both insurers and insureds, typically in commercial and construction disputes.  Her practice includes defence of professional negligence claims and regulatory complaints on behalf of construction design professionals, including engineers (civil, structural and geotechnical) and architects.  She also regularly acts as defence counsel for professionals such as insurance brokers, mortgage brokers, accountants and home inspectors.

In her construction law practice, Vanessa advises clients, including developers, contractors, construction managers and trade contractors, on builders liens, contract disputes, cost overruns and delay claims.  Vanessa’s experience includes a complex stadium construction litigation matter, the commercial arbitration of insurance coverage disputes, and the arbitration of delay, extra work and deficiency claims following the construction of hydropower facilities on Vancouver Island and in northern British Columbia.
